The Story

I was sitting in my apartment in Istanbul in 2000. It was a particularly boring day as my work had finished early so I sat down to crank out a few lines to see what would come out. "Tellen So'tar stared through the floor ports across the Great Plain." In that moment, I knew exactly where the story was headed.

One of the strangest aspects of developing City of Heaven was the terrible parallel to 9/11 that took place almost two years after I began writing. After 9/11 I stopped working on the story. When I did pick up its continuance, it was usually in spurts. There were too many coincidences: a radical religious movement embarking on a plan of global domination through terror, survivors battling all to escape a certain doom, an impending war.

Between Time: City of Heaven takes place 1400 years after the reign of The Great King has ended. The world still resides in relative peace and safety, but it has forgotten the principles that led to humankind's greatest era, The Great Generation. It's principle system of faith, Royalism, once a global theocracy under the Great King, has degenerated to become a politically oriented belief system. The Synod of Nations, headquarters for the Royalist Social Movement, wields great influence in society, but it's deeper spiritual significance often takes a back seat to politics and political agendas. To most people, Royalism is the realm of mythers. And no one likes a myther.

In response to what they see as a growing threats to their beliefs, Royalist factions, from the violent to the reformist, seek to restore the principles of the Great Generation.

High above Terra, connected to the planet by a system of tethers stretching from the surface to 64,000 kilometers in space, the civilian space station City of Heaven is home to more than 1 million citizens. A futuristic Tower of Babel, City of Heaven is human kind's greatest achievement.

Enter the Ar'Chay Order, a radical sect of Royalism determined to force the world to bend its knee, with ar'chaists assuming leadership. In a single act of terror, they sever the tethers connecting City of Heaven to the ground, killing almost all of its inhabitants, and sending the massive orbital city nodes on a collison course with Terra where millions more will surely die.

On both Terra, and the remains of Heaven, survivors struggle for control, and the royalist movement reaches a crucible that promises to unleash a new global movement of faith-cleansing that will rid the world of Royalism once and for all.

Real Engineering

It makes for interesting fiction, but is it possible, can an elevator from the ground to orbit really be built? Will people someday record their thoughts and communications through bioneural circuits?
